This wikiHow teaches you how to make a simple flying machine in Minecraft. You can build this out of pistons, a sticky piston, redstone blocks, and solid blocks. This design only works on the Java Edition and the Playstation 4 Edition of Minecraft. This does not work on Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, or Minecraft on mobile, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.

Steps

  1. 1

Stack blocks to get off the ground. It is important for the flying machine to be built off the ground. You can either make a nerdpole, find a tall tree or mountain and stack a few blocks to get off the ground to get where you want to start crafting the machine.

  2. 2

Place a piston on top of the highest block. The direction the head of the piston faces will be the same direction the flying machine will travel.

  3. 3

Place a slime block in front of the piston. Make sure the slime block is against the head of the piston.

  4. 4

Place two blocks after the slime block. You can use any block you want. Place two blocks in a row after the slime block.

  5. 5

Remove the first block and replace it with a sticky piston. After placing two blocks after the slime block, remove the first one so that there is a space in between the slime block and the second block. Place a sticky piston on the second block so that the head of the piston is facing the sticky block (the opposite direction of the first piston).

  6. 6

Remove the second block and replace it with a piston. Now remove the second block behind the sticky piston and replace it with a piston. The head of the piston should be facing the direction opposite of the sticky piston (the same direction as the first piston).

  7. 7

Place a slime block in front of the new piston. Place another slime block against the head of the piston you just placed.

  8. 8

Build a platform after the slime block (optional). If you want to make a rideable flying machine, build it out of any material attached to the last slime block.

    • This isn't the fastest or most efficient way to travel in Minecraft, but it is a fun glitch to try.
  9. 9

Place redstone blocks on top of the slime blocks. These redstone blocks will help power the flying machine after it starts.

  10. 10

Remove the blocks under the flying machine. Whatever blocks you placed on the ground to get the flying machine off the ground, go ahead and remove them so that the flying machine is in the air by itself.

    • On the Playstation Edition of Minecraft, the flying machine will start moving after this step.
  11. 11

Place a redstone block on the sticky piston. It's the second piston facing the opposite direction as the other two pistons. Placing a redstone block on it will cause it to extend.

  12. 12

Remove the redstone block attached to the sticky piston. As soon as you remove the redstone block from the sticky piston, it will retract and the machine will keep moving through the air in perpetual motion.

    • Remove one of the redstone blocks to stop the flying machine.
    • This flying machine is a one time, one use machine. Once you reach your destination, it must be rebuilt again.

  • Question

I tried this on a PC and it turned into a walking machine, not a flying machine. What am I doing wrong?

    Community Answer

You might have it too close to the ground. Try to make it higher in the air.

  • Question

Can I make a simple flying machine on the Xbox version of Minecraft?

    Community Answer

Now, with the updated editions, yes you can. The same way shown here should work.

    Community Answer

You just have to stand between the redstone blocks. They will push you forward with the machine so you don't fall off.

  • Question

Can I add TNT destructors for when I get to a destination?

    Community Answer

Yes, if you have a block to activate the TNT attached to it with a power source like a redstone block at the destination.

  • Question

What can I do to make it actually fly?

    Community Answer

You could add a lever or button next to the piston. You can commonly use a red stone dust trail from the lever to the piston. If you crouch, you can place it on the piston.

  • Question

Does this work for Playstation 4?

    Community Answer

Yes, I have made plenty, but they cause a lot of lag when they get too complicated.

  • Question

Will I be able to ride my flying machine after making it?

    Community Answer

Yes, just stand between the 2 redstone blocks. The blocks will drag you along with them.

  • Question

How do I make animals fly in Minecraft PE?

    Community Answer

You can get a mod. Or you can also maybe make a shulker hit them somehow. Shulkers make levitation when they hit a target.

  • Question

Can this machine work in Minecraft Pocket Edition?

    Community Answer

Maybe. If you have sticky pistons, yes. Although Minecraft PC offers more mods, you will be sure to find one someday.

  • Question

Why would I want to make a simple flying machine in Minecraft?

    Community Answer

Some people find it fun to go around flying in survival mode. It's also a great, but expensive, means of transportation.
